Description

The 7th Bobsleigh World Championships were held on January 29–30, 1938, first in four-man bobsleigh at the Olympic bobsleigh track in the German winter sports resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, site of the 1936 Winter Olympics, and on February 9–10, 1938 in two-man bobsleigh held at the Olympic ice rink in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

In addition to the usual teams from Europe, a team from the USA had also registered for the four-man bobsleigh world championships on the Olympic bobsleigh track in am Riessersee. Last year's bronze medalist in four-man bobsleigh, Donald "Donna" Fox and his crew, consisting of Clifford Gray, James Bickford and Bill Dupree, had traveled by ship to Europe in mid-January 1938 and arrived in Upper Bavaria on time. At the same time, Fox was to act as a kind of official in talks to finalize the organization of the next Bobsleigh World Championships in Lake Placid. However, the New Yorker didn't have the best memories of the not uncontroversial bobsleigh track, having fallen in training at the Olympic Games and being replaced by another pilot. Francis Tyler finished sixth in the Olympic four-man event with the crew of Donna Fox. Now Fox wanted to do better, but already in training he approached the race too briskly and his bob flew off the track in the notorious Bayern curve. Fox injured his spine, brakeman Clifford Gray broke two ribs. That was the end of the World Championship chapter for the Americans, because pilot Donna Fox had to spend a while longer in the hospital. At the time, however, he had no idea that this injury would ultimately end his sporting career.

The group consist of various fotos, a legal waiver and two commemorative plaques, one being for the controversial 1938 event and another for an event after the war in 1953.
