Prussia - M1889 Leibgendarmerie parade helmet to Gefreiter Madel

Description

Extremely rare M1889 helmet to Gefreiter Walter Madel for EM of the Prussian "Leibgendarmerie".

Iron helmet with original nickel-finish in place. Tombak fittings. A "Garde" front plate from German silver (Neusilber) showing an enamelled eagle as well as the "Garde" motto "Suum Cuique" and bandeau "Mit Gott für König und Vaterland".

Chinscales with Prussian cockade. "Reichskokarde" missing. Chinscales attached to button M94. Leather strap in place but damaged.

Both visors with original green (front) and black (rear) paint remaining. "55" size stamped to the bottom of the rear visor. Including the original leather liner with markings of the Gardekorps "Bekleidungsamt". "1913" dated: "B.A.G. 1913". Liner separated from the prong to the reverse but easy to reapply.

Parade eagle to a bottom plate showing old solder and period time pencil notes. Bottom plate attached with the correct wing nut. Leather washer. Extra holes to the helmet to attach the service spike which is absolutely correct. Eagle with minor damage to its left wing tip.

Including a photo of Walter Madel (16,5cm x 7,5cm, Agfa-Brovira paper) as well as a photograph of his unit with lettering "Gala = Wache d. Leibgarde S.M.d. Kaiserin Potsdam 1912". Size 35cm x 28,5cm. Madel is the second from the right as it says to the reverse. It matches the single photograph. He is shown as a member of the 2. Zug here. He might have switched the "Zug" at a certain time.

To the reverse, notes a relative with the same name stating that this helmet belonged to Gefreiter Walter Madel: "Gefr. Walter Madel, zweiter von rechts. Ehemaliger Eigentümer des Leibgendarmerie Helmes. Walter Madel".

Extremely rare helmet from historical importance. Only worn by members of the "1. Zug" of the Leibgendarmerie!

Stored in a cellar for over 40 years and now consigned by the new owners of the property. Never in collector's hands.
