Description

Comprehensive and important U-Boot grouping to Stabsobersteuermann Josef Eschger, born on 20.9.1902. He joined the Reichsmarine in 1922 and served as a U-Boot sailor from at least 1934 until the end of the war. He served on board of U-47 of commander Günther Prien from 5.2.1940 until 2.1.1941. U-47 become famous for sinking the Royal Oak at Scapa Flow. Eschger has survived the war and served with GM/SA after the war.

Certificate to the Iron Cross 1st Class. Not folded. Signs of use and age. "Sengwarden" 8.7.1940 issued. Facsimile signed by Dönitz.
Certificate to the Iron Cross 2nd Class. Not folded. Very nice condition. "Sengwarden" 29.4.1940 issued. Facsimile signed by Dönitz.

Certificate to the Memel Medal. Issued on 26.10.1939 to Stabsobersteuermann Eschger serving with "Kommando U-Flottille Weddigen". Not folded. Minor signs of use.
Certificate to the Sudetenland Medal. Issued on 20.12.1939 to Stabssteuermann Eschger serving with "U-Flottille Weddigen". Not folded. Minor signs of use.
Certificate to the 4rd and 4th Class Long Service Medal for 14 years service time. Issued on 2.10.1936 to Obersteuermann Eschger serving with "Unterseebootsflottille Weddigen". Not folded. Minor signs of use. Signed by Admiral Albrecht.

Certificate to the U-Boot War Badge. Issued at "Sengwarden" on 29.4.1940, the day he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class. Facsimile signed by Dönitz. DIN A4 size. Not folded but quite a few bends. A treasure trove for additional research with his brass ID tag riveted to the reverse cover.

Three promotion certificates dated 1934. 1935, 1938. All U-boot related!

Small size ribbon bar with 5 ribbons including the one to the Memel Medal.

Wehrpaß issued on 7.1.1941 with originally attached photograph in uniform. A period time 2nd issued example confirming all units, promotions, awards and active services since 1922. The award note for the U-Boot War Badge is noted "U-Bootskriegsabz. 23.4.40 7.U.-Flott.Boot 47" and confirmed that he was awarded this badge as a member of U-47.

Hundreds of wartime and early postwar documents all related Josef Eschger. It must be one thick folder. He must have kept every single document ever given to him.

Four nice portrait photos showing him or him with his wife/family.

A personal copy of Wolfgang Frank's propaganda book "Prien greift an" with personal notes with pencil of him inside. Five booklets full of personal notes of Eschger. All pre 1945.

A very important grouping to a member of the most famous Uboat of the Kriegsmarine, if not the 2nd World War.
