Chile - Order of Merit

Description

Bernardo O’Higgins, Supreme Director of Chile, created the Chilean Legion of Merit Order on June 1, 1817, to honor those who had rendered civil services to Chile, especially during its independence. Both Chileans and foreigners could be decorated with this order, and its members had to swear to "Defend the country, uphold its freedom and independence, always be faithful to honor and never forget the glorious distinction with which they had been decorated." The order was dissolved in 1823, after the abdication of O'Higgins.

It was not until 1906, 83 years later and during the government of President Germán Riesco, that the Chilean Medal of Merit was re-created. The first 200 military merit medals were minted in gold and silver, first and second class. Made at the Casa de Moneda, they had a tricolor ribbon. In August 1911 the order was re-designed and structured as follows:

First class: White enameled golden star and cross worn on a tricolor ribbon to wear around the neck.

Second class: Blue enameled silver star and cross on a tricolor ribbon be worn on the chest.

Third class: Silver star and cross without enamel. Worn on a tricolor ribbon to be worn on the chest.

In April 1924 a new class was added. The Grand Officer, to be awarded to heads of state. In 1925 two more would be added creating its final structure: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander with Star, Commander, Officer, and Knight.

On June 20, 1929, the National Award for Merit formally became the Order of Merit of Chile.

In 1956, the originally created Bernardo O'Higgins Medal First Class and Bernardo O'Higgins Medal Second Class were. 8 In 1967, the Order of Merit was separated, and the Order of Bernardo O'Higgins medals became an independent decoration.

Here a Grand Cross set by “Hours Santiago – Chile”. The decorations are made from enameled gilded silver and gold and come with the official boutonniere in the original case of issue and full sash.

Fantastic set.
