Belgium - Vlaamsche Kanaalwacht Cap Patch

Description

The patch for the Kanaalwacht is machine embroidered in white on black wool cloth.

Removed patch.

The Vlaamse Wacht (VW for short) was divided into 4 Abteilungen (battalions), one for each of the major cities in Flanders. The sections that made up these Abteillungen could vary from three to six, depending on the number of volunteers who had signed up. The VOS (Vlaamsche Oud Strijders – Flemish Military Veterans), a collaborationist association, was active in recruiting its members for the Vlaamsche Wacht. Almost all VW officers were former Belgian soldiers, but a German officer was attached to each company. The training was German. The 4 Abteilungen are as follows: Approx. I in Ghent (four sections) Approx. II in Antwerp (six sections) Approx. III in Bruges (three sections) Approx. IV in Brussels (two railway guard companies and one canal guard company) The railway and canal guard companies did not have an Abteilung (Afdeling) number. The badge they wore above the right breast pocket, unlike that of the other units, was simply the open oak leaf wreath without a Roman numeral inside. This also applied to their cap badge. In addition, there were two training sections. In February 1943, the three companies that made up Afdeling III Brugge (Section III Bruges) were granted the honour of the names: 1st Company: Van Severen (the murdered leader of Verdinaso) 2nd Company: Tolleneare (named after the first commander of the DM-ZB, he was killed on the Eastern Front during the Siege of Leningrad, his replacement was Joris Van Steenlandt) 3rd Company: Staf de Clercq (first leader of the VNV who died and was replaced by Doctor Hendrik Elias) Each Afdeling was under the command of a Major (the highest rank within the VW). In addition, there was a Wachtkompanie attached to the SD headquarters in Brussels and men from the Eisenbahn Wachtabteilung (the railway guard company of the Abteilung IV) patrolled with the German railway police in the stations of the Belgian capital. There was also a motorized unit, the Kraftfahrzeufüberführungs-Abteilung zdV (roughly: stand-by Motor Transport Auxiliary). The upper and lower age limits were extended to 17 and 45 years. On the eve of the liberation of Belgium (September 1944), the total strength of the VW was 2,604 men. More than half (1,687) of them were incorporated into the Wehrmacht, mainly in its 406th Landesschützen. Others entered the Luftwaffe Flak Brigade, the NSKK or various units; some 700 ended up in the Waffen SS. The men of Afdeling II saw some minor action in the Allied airborne landings at Arnhem and later rather heavier fighting in the Battle of Antwerp (a stronghold of Flemish nationalism).
