Formed on 01 January 1938 from the staff of II. Admiral der Nordseestation (Itself formed in 1934 from the post of Kommandeur der Schiffsstammdivision der Nordsee). It was planned to rename this position Schiffsstamminspektion in 1939 but due to the outbreak of war this was not carried through. For a few years the 2. Admiral der Nordsee was delegated with the formation and control of the Befehlshabers der Sicherungs der Nordsee and instructed a new Staff for it (A-Abteilung). As soon as war broke out this affiliation was severed and the Befehlshabers der Sicherungs der Nordsee got a new staff. This position controlled the various Schiffsstamm units, Marinelehr units, Marineersatz units and various others in the Nordsee area. In April 1945 the Staffs of the 2. Admiral der Nordsee & 2. Admiral der Ostsee merged. As a result the new staff became known as the 2. Admiral der Ostsee/Nordsee and the Staff of the 2. Admiral der Nordsee was dissolved. The Admiral had his seat in Wilhelmshaven until 1943 when his staff moved to Buxtehude. The 2. Admiral was administratively subordinate to to Marinestationskommando Ostsee/Marineoberkommando Nordsee.
