Description

Personal Luftwaffe officer's visor cap to Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves fighter pilot ace Major Klaus Mietusch. Mietusch served as commander of III./Jagdgeschwader 26 when he was shot down on 17.9.1944 by an US fighter near Aldekerk. Mietusch claimed 72 aerial victories (15 in the East, 57 in the West including the Invasion Front).

Stunning visor cap which could certainly tell some story! Well worn with original hand-attached bullion officer's insignia. Complete with its chin strap and buttons. Silk lining, sweat-band with serious signs of wear and use. Great, dark patina. Named "Oblt. Mietusch" to the inside.

Only a few rather small moth bites. Overall good condition, however about 10cm of the visor stitching has opened. It needs to get professionally re-attached.

Great "crusher" style and proofed by two original photos part of this grouping.

There are 11 original photographs part of this lot including many showing Mietusch wearing his Knight's Cross. Two photos taken in April 1944 show Mietusch wearing exactly the same visor cap being offered with this lot.

The grouping includes period time as well as postwar documents including one with a period time signature of Mietusch.

There is a "Luftflotte West" propaganda magazine (to of them) dated April 1944 publishing a one-page article on Mietusch awarded the Knight's Cross titled "57 aerial victories - injured 4 times - shot down 9 times". The magazine "Der Adler" (1.8.1944) also contains a photo of Mietusch in his aircraft and an article on D-Day fighter pilots.
