Grouping to Major Johannes Stier, commander of Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 278 and recipient of the German Cross in gold. This grouping came of his son and is available on the market for the first time.

Complete certificate grouping including the citations for the German Cross in gold, the Iron Cross 1st (Sturm.-Gesch.Abt.192) and 2nd Class (Art.Rgt.69). Never folded.

Certificates to the Wound Badge in black (Sturm.Gesch.Abt.192), to the General Assault Badge (Sturm.Gesch.Abt.192) and the Westwall Medal. Furthermore a 1942 dated confirmation for being awarded the East Medal. A 1938 dated large certificate to the 4 years Long Service Award and his DRA Sports Badge booklet. It comes with a nice early photo of Stier.

There are many period time evaluations part of the grouping. Written by important Generals and high ranking officers. The overall rating was above-average. These documents are a great source of research too and give exact information on successes of Stier and his Brigade.

In addition there are many progress report on his unit. All period time and containing many pages. One is on the Charkow battle where Stier was part commanding 2./Sturm-Gsch.244. One is on Johannes Stier brave acts: "Tapferkeitstaten des Hauptmanns Johannes Stier, Kommandeur Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 278". It describes 3 acts. There are many period time documents containing extra information on his service time, medals, details etc...

One grouping of documents is on Stier being accused for refusal to obey orders in 1939.

There is the war diary No.1 (Kriegstagebuch No.1) of Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 244 dating back to 27.3.1943 - 31.12.43. 50 pages in total. More of 1./Sturmgeschütz-Brigade Rhodos.

Overall, the documents part of that grouping are extremely rare and were only part of Stiers belongings because of his high rank. They might be not known anymore these days.

Wehrpaß:
1940 issued. Containing a nice early photo of Stier. He served with the police in 1945/35 and joined Art.Rgt.60 in October 1935. He served with Art.Rgt.69 until 1940 when he was sent to Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 192. He commanded 2./Sturmgeschütz-Abt.244 for some time and went to several schools before he was sent to Sturmgeschütz Batterie 287 and to Panzer-Abt. Rhodos in 1943.  He ended up with Sturmschütz-Abt.278 and finally Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 277 in 1944/45.

The Wehrpaß is full of notes and information. The best source of research you can imagine. No page is missing. And it lists of of Stiers awards of course containing the German Cross in gold! There is a long list of battles beginning in 1939 and ending in late 1944.

As the Wehrpaß proofs, Stier had two dog tags. One ART.REGT.69 and one 2./STUG.GESCH.ABT.244. Both are still part of the grouping and Stier used a cord of red uniform piping to wear it.

Awards:
Wound Badge in black, 4 years Long Service Award, tombak Westwall Medal and a maker marked East Medal. Furthermore his 65 maker marked Iron Cross 2nd Class and his Iron Cross 1st Class (postwar repaired catch) in case of issue. His zinc General Assault Badge.

Finally his beautiful Deschler German Cross in gold which he kept in an old private case. The German Cross is in very nice condition. He must have worn a cloth version during the war. 1 maker marked. No chips or damage to the enamel swastika. Fine quality! Condition 2+. Weight: 54,8 gr.

Another highlight of the grouping is field crafted book given to Stiers wedding  in July 1944 by all officers of Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 278. All pictures and hand painted. The cover is made from leather and comes with metal (brass) reinforcements. It must have had the emblem of the Brigade to the front cover once. Unfortunately it is lost. The book is a 1943/44 war diary on his Brigade. It says the original was lost so the officers tried to remember all battles and actions. Stier added many personal notes completing the story. There are maps and drawings inside, too.

Very important and rare grouping. The quantity and quality can´t be shown on pictures. You will be impressed when heaving in your hands and researching Stier. A rare chance!
