Description

Document grouping to Unteroffizier Hans von Appen who served with Kampfgeschwader 3. He has been posted as missing in action in 1941 when he did not return from a flying offensive against Russia in the area of Cholm to Wjasma.

Certificate to the Iron Cross 2nd Class. Issued on 07.12.1940 with original signature of Lörzer (Knight's Cross 29.05.1940). Good condition. Not folded. 

Certificate to the Iron Cross 1st Class. Issued on 13.01.1941 with original signature of Kesselring (Brilliants to Knight's Cross with Swords 19.07.1944). Good condition. Not folded. 

Certificate to the Air Gunner Badge. Issued on 12.03.1941 with facsimile signature of Kastner.Good condition. Folded once.

Certificate to the Squadron Clasp for Kampfflieger in Bronze. Issued on 25.05.1941 with original signature of Chamier-Glisczinski (Knight's Cross 06.10.1940). Good condition. Not folded.

Certificate to the Squadron Clasp for Kampfflieger in Silver. Issued on 10.07.1941 with original signature of Rieckhoff (Knight's Cross 05.07.1941). Good condition. Not folded.

Certificate to the Squadron Clasp for Kampfflieger in Gold. Issued on 14.09.1941 with original signature of Rieckhoff (Knight's Cross 05.07.1941). Good condition. Not folded.

Certificate to the Bulgarian Pilot's Badge (issued on 01.07.1942) & a letter to von Appen's father including the certificate and badge of his, at this time, already missing son.

A congratulatory letter of Generalfeldmarschall Alfred Kesselring issued on 20.01.1941 with original signature of Chamier-Glisczinski.

Also including in this comprehensive lot is Hans von Appen's obligation note for another 8 years of service with 9./K.G. 3 issued on 26.10.1940 and his Wehrpass issued on the 01.08.1936 with an original attached photograph. Serving with 9./K.G. 3. Entries made: promotions from "Gefreiter" to "Unteroffizier". Awards and decorations including an Iron Cross 2nd, 1st Class and the Squadron Clasp for Kampfflieger in Gold. As well as entries for his flying missions: 34 mission in the Battle of Britain, 22 missions in the Balkan area and 68 missions at the Eastern Front. Last entry is the report of him being missing.

With 6 pages of his flight book including 34 missions from 29.10.1940-25.03.1941. 21 were missions Leutnant Heinz Geschwill, who was awarded the Knight's Cross.

Also including are several documents concerning von Appen's disappearance i.A. a letter (transcription) to Mr. and Mrs. von Appen (15.10.1941), waybill of the submission of Hans von Appen's estate to his parents (13.11.1941), a DRK so-called "Heimkehrer-Erklärung" (26.06.1954), multiple insurance letters and a letter from von Appen's father to his friend in Wien. 

Lastly a modern copy of a photograph of Hans van Appen wearing his flying gear.
