Grouping to U-Boot Oberfunktmaat Martin Horenburg serving on U-869.
In 1991, a fishing boat accidentally found a submarine wreck about 70 km off the coast of New Jersey. Thereupon a diving team explores the wreck for years. With the goal of finding out which submarine it is. During this time, the mission was accompanied by a camera team. A found kitchen knife, in which the name "Horenburg" was engraved, was one of the most important pieces of evidence. It took six years to finally identify the submarine. It was U-869 and the and history had to be rewritten. Until that date (1997), U-869 was believed to have been sunk near Gibraltar. The official records state now, that U-869 was destroyed on 11. February 1945 by two U.S. destroyer escorts, "Howard D. Crow" and "Koiner".
A part of the grouping is the kitchen knife (to see in the documentation). In addition, a wooden cutlery tray, a door sign with his name as well as a 1942 Kriegsmarine KPM porcelain bowl. Every piece was recovered from the wreck.
