Police bayonet

Description

This example has still very deep carving to the pommel and cross-guard areas. The pommel features the eagle head which looks to the left. The beak is quite large and well curved.

The cross-guard features the overlapping oak leaves on the obverse and just the end half is oak leafed on the reverse.

The grip plates are fine antler having mostly dark coloring in the stag with some lighter colors in the grain and golden edges. The grip plates are retained by rivets having domed heads on both sides. The grip insignia is a fine example being the open aluminum type featuring a wreath with a superimposed eagle looking to the left clutching a swastika. The eagle shows little wear.

The scabbard is a dark brown leather type showing little usage and age. The scabbard is fitted with nickel mounts having scalloped edges, retained by staples. Marked P.B. 11. There is a black frog which has experienced quite a bit of wear. See pictures for details. Marked on reverse.

The blade is a very fine example and it is in great condition. It is marked on the reverse with the early large Eickhorn ovals which retain the firm's name and location Carl Eickhorn Solingen and inside is a seated squirrel over the initials CE. This trademark comes from about 1933 or 34.

Overall a great set.
