Duke Carl Eduard created the Medal for Arts and Science in March 1905. The medal existed in silver, gold (gilded silver) and gold with crown. The silver medal was awarded for artists like singers, actors and instrumentalists. The higher grade with crown was reserved for exceptional “performance”. The medal had to be awarded in sequence and no grade was to be skipped. The tools for the medal were created by Max von Kawaczynski (1860-1910) and produced by the company L. Chr. Lauer in Nuremberg.
