Hesse-Darmstadt - Order of Ludwig Knight's Cross 2nd Class

Description

This knight’s cross 2nd class is made from gold and enamel. The cross seems to be one of those that were awarded to more then one recipient through the order’s existence. The grand duke of Hesse was rather tight with his money. Not only was the order very sparsely awarded, but returned decorations were always repaired and modified to the than fashionable standard. The motto within the reverse medallion is unfortunately missing, but the decoration does not stand behind it’s contemporaries in quality and condition.

Since the order was almost always awarded on jubilees, e.g. the birthday of the duke, only a handful of decorations were given out to a very select group of people. The knight ‘s cross 2nd class is probably bedsides the Honor Cross the rarest of all classes as it would have been dedicated to a low-ranking member of society that could have been honored with a Order of Phillip in a financially more efficient way. However, the recipients of this cross were certainty dear to the Grand Duke.

A rare opportunity to acquire a cross like this.

The Order of Ludwig was a general merit order awarded by the Grand Duchy of Hesse, which was founded on August 25, 1807, by Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse-Darmstadt without statutes and without designation. It was only under the founder's son, Grand Duke Ludwig II, that the Order received official statutes and the official name “Ludewigs-Orden” on December 14, 1831.

The order was initially awarded in five classes without any designation to their classes but just consecutively numbered. It was not until the reorganization of the Order in 1831 under Grand Duke Ludwig II that the classes were assigned traditional class designations:

  • 1st Class: Grand Cross
  • 2nd Class: Commander First Class
  • 3rd Class: Commander Second Class
  • 4th Class: Knight First Class
  • 5th Class: Knight Second Class

In 1853 the Grand Duke extended the Order with an affiliated Gold Medal and in 1859 with one in Silver. In 1912, Ernst-Ludwig revised the statutes and abolished the subdivision of knights. From then on, the Knight's Cross First Class was awarded as a Cross of Honor. On the 25th anniversary of his reign, he created the collar to the Ludwig Order in 1917. With the outbreak of the First World War, Ernst-Ludwig declared the Order a Military Merit Order. Decorations with swords are known.
