König Ludwig II. Medal of Honor of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts awarded to Julius Ritter von Payern.

Fine solid medal. Made from real silver. "A. Stanger. Fec." marked. Engraved "Julius Ritter von Payern" and "1883" to the rim. Patina.

Diameter: 55.66mm. Weight: 99gr.

Rare medal. Good condition.

Julius Johannes von Payern was born on 2. September 1839. He was an Austro-Hungarian officer, polar and alpine explorer, cartographer and professor of the military academy as well as a famous painter. From 1872 until 1874 he headed together with Carl Weyprecht the Austro-Hungarian North Pole expedition. During this expedition the "Franz-Josef-Land" was discovered.
For this merit Julius Payer was 1876 elevated into the knight rank.
