Description

2 drawings and 3 handwritten letters made by war artist (specialized on naval scenes) artist Claus Bergen.

Pen drawings on the letterhead. Letters from Munich and Lenggries. Detailed and historically important letters to the Marine-Offizier von Thomsen in Kiel-Mürwik, who had commissioned a painting from Bergen (scene showing an expiring submarine at Port-Louis in Brittany). Bergen appreciated him a lot as a consultant:

"No one knows this milieu here in Munich." (Letter of 24th of June 1941). "Now you are in Mürwik. I have been there years ago to make a big painting that has its place in the large auditorium now. I now have to paint a large Skagerrak-picture for Mürwik on behalf of the O.K.K. Maybe I'll paint it right there and there ... ".

In the 3rd letter, he talks in detail about his well-known submarine series. "I am painting a big u-boat scene in my atelier in the mountains since the beginning of January. The biggest one in the series so far ... I had to build a framework because the canvas is this big. ... Standing in front of this picture, I feel like a submarine driver... ".

There are two drawings to illustrate this idea, on each beginning of the last two pages of the letter, where on the one hand a submarine with the title "prose" and on the other the old coastal walls of Port Louis ("poetry") are sketched - both are an extension the printed letterhead, designed by the artist, which shows a stylized Viking ship with waves.
