Description

Important Luftwaffe document grouping to Oberleutnant Albrecht Bellstedt serving as a Staffelkapitän with I. Zerstörergeschwader 1 and III. Jagdgeschwader 2. German Cross in Gold on 14. November 1943. Killed in aerial combat on 21.10.1944 near Limburg-Montabaur.

Oberleutnant Bellstedt shot down a total of 11 aircraft during his military service. Among them, on 1. June 1943, was a civilian DC3 aircraft with the English actor and filmmaker Leslie Howard on board. He and 16 other passengers lost their lives. Howard was very active in anti-German propaganda and supported the Allied forces. To this day, the circumstances are unclear. Some speculation says the shootdown was for Winston Churchill, as the Luftwaffe assumed he was aboard that aircraft.
