Description

Family purchased grouping of Hauptmann Kurt Rick. A Stuka Knight’s Cross recipient who was shot down over Stalingrad on 5.2.1943. Rick was awarded the Luftwaffe Honor Goblet on 27.5.1942 and the German Cross in Gold as an Oberleutnant serving with 2./Stuka-Geschader 77 on 21.8.1942 and the Knight’s Cross posthumously on 3.4.1943. Awarded in recognition of his record as a ground attack pilot over 520 sorties.

This grouping came straight of the family and was never available on the market before! An incredibly rare grouping of a Stuka Stalingrad "Ass"!

Beautiful Honor Goblet with untouched patina. No dents or damage. Weight: 363,5 gr.
Engraved OBERLEUTNANT KURT RICK AM 27.5.42
"Feinsilber Alpaka Auflage" marked as well as "Joh. Wagner & Sohn" maker marked.

His personal Flugbuch issued on 21.4.1941 and finished on 14.9.42 stating his flights number 690 - 1152. There are 22 pages with mostly enemy missions showing comments to the right which explain his battles and attacks. There are many missions flown in Charkow, Kertsch, of course, Stalingrad and a lot more locations. The first mission to Stalingrad dates back to 23.8.1942. We could count 22 missions to Stalingrad excluding a lot of missions between them which might be places around Stalingrad. Many times it clearly states "Stadt Stalingrad".

There are three areal photos which could show Stalingrad during an attack. At least there is a large river shown which would be the river Volga.
There are 24 photos in total. Most of them look to be pre war. Two show period time drawings of a pilot which dedicated one of them to Rick on the bottom.

Part of the group are family related WW1 period time photographes as well as documents. There are also military documents related to Kurt Rick. One small paper mentions "Stalingrad" and might have been a press photo tag originally. A small card sent from Rick to his damily (April 42) states that he was just promoted an Oberleutnant. He asks to ship three pair of collar tabs and 10 golden pips. He prefers a clear sharp yellow instead of an orange color and asks them to attach some new rank insignia to his uniforms which stayed at home as well.

There are about 40 field post letters sent from Kurt Rick. Three of them are clearly related to the battle of Stalingrad. One is dated 12.1.1943, another is stamped on 6.2.1943 (one day after his death). Rick served over Stalingrad at that time. A third one was sent to Rick on 21.3.43 but was returned "ZUrück an Absender! Empfänger vermißt" (back to the sender. Addressee missed).
There are only the envelopes left and no letters but it is possibly that they are still part of the other letters and envelopes which might have been mixed up over the decades. We can't guarantee, however.

We found one document sent to his father on the internet confirming that Rick was promoted a Hauptmann on 1.2.1943. Please click here.
