Description

The Dannebrog Order believed to have originally been established by King Valdemar II in 1219, and later re-instituted by King Christian V, in honor of the birth of his first son (King Frederik IV) in 1671. It was revised by King Frederick VI in 1808, adding four new classes, and was then awarded to any Danish man, without restrictions to age or his rank. To date, the Order is awarded to recognize individuals who have rendered outstanding, commendable, and distinctive military or civil service, as well as contribution to the sciences, arts, or business.

Knight Cross 1st Class from the reissue by King Frederick VI who reigned from March 13, 1808, to December 3, 1839. The decoration seems to be of lower content gold as it used to be during the Napoleonic wars. Even the French used in some instances 4 carat gold for their 1st type of the Ordre Legion d’Honneur.

An extremely rare cross from the reissue of the order in 1808 of historical value.
