Merit Cross for sacrifice and loyalty to duty in times of war

Description

Oldenburg Cross of Merit for Sacrifice and Loyalty to Duty in Times of War, issued in 1871 by Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter for "Persons....who, during the war against France, in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg through voluntary work for purposes caused by the war or acquired the right to recognition through special faithful official performance of duty". The almost mint, multi-part, slightly worn cross made of gold-plated bronze is suspended from an original ribbon. Beyreiss states in his work "The House Order and the Portable Decorations of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg" ISBN 3 - 931533 - 31 - X, that only 163 crosses were awarded. Hard-to-procure badge of honor from the Franco-Prussian War.
