Description

Nice group of a wounded but highly decorated soldier of the Great War. The vaulted Iron Cross 1st class, 1914, is made from silver with and iron core. The silver frame is marked on the reverse with the silver content “800” just below the needle catch.

The Wound badge is made from gilt bronze, weights 10.8g and measures 38.6x43.4 mm. It is unmarked.

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
