Bronze Merit Medal CAROLVS AVGVSTVS

Description

Bronze Medal of Merit of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach on the original ribbon with miniature barrette, showing the Avers side of a later medal. Stamp cutter "ANDRIEU F." Very clean coinage. Duke Carl-August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach awarded this sparingly from 1814 on in the bronze, silver and gold for general merit, as a prize or for gifts. These specimens were awarded without eyelets for wear. In order to be allowed to wear the medal, an application had to be made, which then allowed the user to procure the eyelet at his own expense. This explains the number of variants on the few known specimens.

The medal could be returned after the death of the recipient for a refund of the material value. However, they were not allowed to be sold or gifted.

The bronze medal was minted only 200 times.

The specimen with the miniature beret is of the utmost interest to the Weimar collector.
