Description

Very rare Grand Cross of the 1870 Iron Cross as used as a decoration of flag pole finials. You can see the rivets with which the cross was attached to the flagpole finial.

Three-part construction. Iron core (the identical type of core was used for the "real" crosses). Original black paint. Signs of use and the core has a fine crack.

Size:61.07x61.20 mm.

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
