On 16 October 16, 1914, King Ludwig III issued the two-class (1st and 2nd class) Military Medical Order for excellent merits that medical officers of the army acquire in the care and treatment of wounded and sick officers under mortal danger. This new order replaced the previously existing Military Medical Decoration, founded in 1812. For Bavarian citizens, the Order was associated with the payment of a lifelong stipend. The crosses were supplied by the Munich company Gebrüder Hemmerle, the ribbons for the award by the company Joseph Koppold. The Bavarian War Archive lists a total of 163 holders of the 2nd class, who received them between 1914 and 1920. By decree of the former Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria (1869-1955) of 18 December 1953, it was ordered that in future the 2nd class of the Order should also be worn on the neck.
