Oldenburg - House and Merit Order Grand Commander Set with Swords on Ring

Description

This Grand Commander Set with swords on ring consists of cross and star in gold, silver, and enamel. The cross has some minor shipping in the avers of the red enamel in the medallion ring while the star has some hairline cracking in the blue center enamel but has not impact on the beauty of the set itself. Ribbon ring made from gold plated silver with appropriate silver content mark "800".

As most Oldenburg order decorations this is also finished with alternating red and yellow gold highlights.

The pictures speak for themselves.

The swords on ring were introduced on February 11, 1856, as sign for those that had received the lower grade for bravery with swords. Only 17 total set were awarded from January 17, 1857, to about 1918. The star with swords on ring was only introduced 22 years later in 1879. A star without swords on ring would have been worn previous to 1879.

This is an exceedingly rare opportunity to acquire a set like this.

An amazing set despite those minor blemishes.
