Description

Very interesting domed Iron Cross 1st Class, 1914, with screw on mechanism. The domed Iron core is placed inside a silver frame and has two screws attached to the reverse on the upper and lower cross arm. Square makers mark placed right in the middle of the reverse of the cross.

Exceedingly fine condition.

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
