Medal Bar from a 1870/71 War Veteran

Description

Medal consists of Hesse-Darmstadt, Order of Philip the Magnanimous, silver cross with crown 2nd type, silver and enameled, reverse center missing, Hesse-Darmstadt, Military Long Service Cross for 25 years of service, silver, Hesse-Darmstadt, Field Service Medal 1840, bronze, Prussia, War Commemorative Medal 1870/71, bronze, with 5 bronze gilt clasps, “Gravelotte St.Privat”, “Noisseville”, “Orleans”, “Le Mans”, “Metz” and Prussia, Centennial medal, bronze. The bar is intact with red felt backing and full needle mount on the reverse.

The “Grossherzoglich Hessische Ordensliste 1914” lists less than 70 living recipients for the silver cross with crown of the Phillip Order and makes this an exceedingly rare combination despite condition of the cross itself.

The bar would be from a veteran of the Franco Prussian War from the IX. Army Corps.
