United Kingdom - Royal Victorian Order - Grand Cross

Description

Grand Cross and Star in silver, silver gilt and enamel. Minor surface flakes in blue enamel. Star on red golden needle.

The Royal Victorian Order is a dynastic order of knighthood established April 21, 1896 by Queen Victoria. It recognizes distinguished personal service to the monarch of the Commonwealth realms, members of the monarch's family, or to any viceroy or senior representative of the monarch. The present monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is the sovereign of the order, the order's motto is Victoria, and its official day is 20 June.

There is no limit on the number of individuals honored at any grade, and admission remains at the sole discretion of the monarch, with each of the order's five grades and one medal with three levels representing different levels of service.

The earliest Royal Victorian Orders were issued unnumbered. In 1901, it was decided that significant awards should be numbered. This example is marked 681 on the reverse of the Grand Cross and the accompanying star. Measurements: Cross: Weight 60.8 g, Dimensions: 72.9 x 76.9 mm, Star: Weight: 72.8 g, Dimensions: 86.3 x 87.1 mm
