Austria-Hungary - Franz Josef Order Grand Cross Star

Description

The imperial-Austrian Franz Josef order was founded on December 2, 1848, in memory of the anniversary of his accession. This order was accessible to all citizens of the empire.

This Grand Cross Star is made from Silver, gold, and enamel. This star is the 2nd model with the finer diamond cut design. Proper marking for the grand cross class “G” on the reverse left to the center signet plaque. The later shows the maker “Vinc. Mayer’s Söhne Wien”. Needle shows additional two “A” markings.

Typical star from around the century change. Awarded with real golden applications from 1872 to 1916 only.

Only 730 grand crosses were awarded until 1905. Living recipients of the grand cross class in 1917 were only a total of 1026. The majority would have been awarded a set made from gold. Yet a nice and rare example of an earlier star despite a few chips to the enamel.
