During the First World War, he commanded various torpedo boats and was head of the 2nd Torpedoboot-Halbflottille at the end of the war. He was also a member of the Marine Brigade Ehrhardt. From January 1941 until October 1942, he served as Chief Shipyard Director at the St. Nazaire Naval Dockyard. In September 1942 promoted to Vizeadmiral.
