The following wartime excerpt describes why Eggers would be awarded the Knight’s Cross:
… “During the Fourth Battle of Kharkov Unteroffizier Eggers destroyed more than 20 enemy tanks on the 08.08.1943 over the course of an hours-long tank battle. He was thereafter recommended for the award of the Knight’s Cross. By the 21.08.1944 Johann Eggers had destroyed 46 enemy tanks.”
