Kriegsmarine U-65 map case - LI G. Queste

Description

Impressive map case of the German WW2 submarine U-65. The "U-Boot" was under the command of Kapitänleutnant Hans-Gerrit von Stockhausen (15.2.1940 – 24.3.1941) and of Kapitänleutnant Joachim Hoppe (25.3.1941 – 28.4.1941). Over the course of six war patrols between 9.4.1940 and 28.4.1941, she sank twelve ships and damaged three others for a total loss of 88,664 gross register tons. U-65 was sunk Southeast of Island on 28.4.1941.

Wooden construction with foldable covers from cardboard. The construction is finished with black linen. In addition, the corners have metal reinforcements attached.
The case was closed with buckles and black straps. Both buckles are still in place. One strap is broken, the green-black strap is a period time replacement. The carrying strap is originally attached and exactly the same strap as a replacement strap of the reverse.

White velvet lining to protect the maps. It allows having maps inside with the size of roughly 74cm x 55cm.

A metal plate "U 65" to the front side from zinc. Letter "U", numbers and emblem is cut out. The torpedo is separately attached above the letter "U". The plate is nailed or riveted onto the front side.

Size: 83cm x 62cm.

According to our consignor, this case belonged to U-65's LI Günther Queste. It was found at the household clearance of the Queste family.
