In the last days of World War II, Adolf Hitler appointed Greim as commander of the Luftwaffe in place of Hermann Göring, whom he had dismissed for treason. When Germany surrendered, Greim was taken prisoner by American forces, he committed suicide in prison on 24 May 1945.
