1914 Iron Cross 1st Class to Major Freiherr zu Eschwege. Awarded on 28. May 1916. "Eschwege" is the name of a Hessian nobility family.
Three-part construction. Iron core. Original black paint. "800" silver hallmark to the pin. Engraved to the back "Major Frhr. z. Eschwege ..." (the last word is hard to read).
With the original dark red case of issue. The case opens and closes correctly. Repaired to the back. Furthermore the rare outer carton. "zu Eschwege" named and "28.5.16" dated to the front.
A very nice set!

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).
The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
