Description

Nicely worn 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class. "K.A.G" maker marked. Three-part construction. Magnetic iron core.

Good condition 2.

Walter Hübner served with the Imperial "Fliegertruppe" in WW1. Later in the Third Reich he also served with the Luftwaffe and the DLV. After his military service and the end of the war, he worked for the PFL (Propulsion Field Laboratory) as an aeronautical engineer. The facility tested rocket engines for the US space program from 1949 to 2006, including the F-1 engine used on the "Apollo" program.

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
