Description

This most prestigious bravery award, the so called Pour le Merit for NCOs, is made from gilded silver. Nice patina with remnants of gilding. The bottom of the cross is marked "W 938" for the maker Wagner in Berlin and its silver content.

Comes with the rare case of issue and original ribbon.

The Military Merit Cross was the Prussians highest military award for non-commissioned officers and enlisted men. It is also called "Pour le Mérite for non-commissioned officers". The Military Merit Cross and was created on February 27, 1864, by King Wilhelm I of Prussia in three grades. It had its origins in the military Honor medal created by King Friedrich Wilhelm II in 1793.

This decoration was awarded in three grades, the military honor medal second class, Military Honor Cross 1st class and the actual Military Merit Cross.

The first awards were made in 1866 to 16 non-commissioned officers and enlisted men who were involved during the war against Austria.

During the 1st World War, 1770 Military Merit Crosses and 917 Military Honor Cross 1st class were awarded.
