Instituted by
Großherzog Wilhelm Ernst von Sachsen

The medal was instituted in 1915 by Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst to be awarded to female recipients for meritorious humanitarian services during wartime. Grand Duchess Feodora was patron of the Ladies Union of the Grand Duchy of Saxony. The Union had been founded in 1815 by Grand Duchess Maria Paulovna to provide aid and relief to the wounded veterans of the Napoleonic Wars. The medal was designed by Professor Roemer, in Munich and was originally intended to be produced in silver but war related shortages led to the medal being produced in silvered zinc alloy instead.
