Tabel Medal for the opening of the Sint-Anna Tunnel in 1933

Description

After the First World War, a suburb with high-rise buildings, but also terraced housing estates, was built on the left bank of the Scheldt opposite the historic city center of Antwerp. This new district was opened in the 1930s with the Waasland Tunnel, a road tunnel, and the Sint-Anna Tunnel, as there are no bridges over the Scheldt in Antwerp so as not to affect the shipping lanes. Construction of the Sint-Anna Tunnel began in 1931, and the inauguration took place on 10 September 1933, as with the Waasland Tunnel. During the Second World War, German troops severely damaged the Sint-Anna Tunnel during the retreat. It was not until 1949 that the tunnel could be re-inaugurated.

Medal to the tunnel opening in 1933. Impressive medal with contemporary design.

This medal is part of a medal group of an unidentified Weimar citizen.
