Denmark - Order of Dannebrog Knight Cross Fredrik VII 1848-1863

Description

This knight cross of the Order of Dannebrog was made during the reign of Fredrik VII, 1848-1863, in gold and enamel. The ribbon ring is a solid golden and contemporary snap ring.

The Order of Dannebrog was created by King Christian V in 1671 as a revival of an alleged older order instituted by King Valdemar Sejr after the battle of Lyndanisse (in Estonia) in 1219. The order had initially only one class and the members were called 'white knights' (as opposed to the Order of the Elephant's 'blue knights'). The order was reformed by King Frederik VI in 1808, who not only introduced several classes after the French model, but who also made the order available to a larger audience.

Exceedingly rare version of the Dannebrog order from the reign of Christian VIII. (1839 - 1848) but upgraded for his successor by changing the actual Cypher.

A very rare example despite a few minor chips in the enamel. Only awarded in this design for the period of 15 years.
