Cased Set of 1914 Iron Cross 1st & 2nd Class

Description

A present set of Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd class, 1914. The case by Josef Netter fits the crosses perfectly and has a spot for the 2nd class ribbon.

The 1st Class cross is made from silver and has a blackened Iron core. The 2nd Class is equally crafted and has a makers mark on its ring.

A scarce set.

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
