Description

Important Bavarian presentation sword to Rudolf Ritter und Edler von Xylander (1842-1946). It was presented to Hauptmann von Xylander leaving 1.Feldartillerie-Regiment 22 in 1906. 

Von Xylander is known for having formulated the military counterproposals of the Treaty of Versailles together with Generaloberst Johannes Friedrich Leopold von Seeckt. He published several military books as a military historian and was promoted a Generalmajor in WWII.

At the beginning of World War I, von Xylander served with the Generalstab of the 6. Armee and was involved in the battles at Arras, Ypern and in the French part of Flanders. As commander of the Feldartillerie Regiment 9, he fought from August 1916 in the Carpathians. In 1917 the 1.Feldartillerie Regiment was subordinated to him and henceforth he served on the Western Front (Champagne and Forest of Argonne). He was promoted a General der Artillerie in 1917.

On 24. April 1941 he was appointed commander of the Feldkommandantur 680 in Melun. At the same time he worked at the "Kriegswissenschaftliche Abteilung" of the Oberkommando des Heeres.  On 31. January 1943 von Xylander retired from the military service in the rank of a Generalmajor.

Fine presentation saber with damask blade. Nickel-plated handle with a ray skin finished grip. Intact wire.  Gilded and etched to three sides as well as blued backround. Inscription "In Treue fest" and "Dem scheidenden Hauptmann von Xylander das 1.Feld-Artill.Rgt.22 IX.1893 bis 23.II.1906.". "JOS.VIERHEILIGS.NACHF." (merchant) marked and "WK&C" maker marked.

Black painted steel scabbard. Some small dents. One screw to the top is missing.

Length: 106cm. 

Including the matching sabre knot. A nice sword in good condition 2.
