The city of Lemberg was occupied by the Red Army in September 1939 (Hitler-Stalin Pact) and captured by German troops of Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 98 and 99 two years later on 30.6.1941. The Russians were facing a insurgency of Ukrainian nationalists just 5 days prior the German invading of Lemberg. Over 5000 insurgents were captured by the Russian NKWD and the majority were killed just before the Wehrmacht arrived.
Some of the photos part of this grouping document the days after the 30.6.41 and were taken for propaganda purpose. They show Ukrainian people killed by the Russian NKWD. Hitler allowed to publish them for the needs of his regime.
