The Merit Medal for Services during the Water Crisis of 1882 – 1883 was created by Grand Duke Ludwig IV. of Hessen on February 24,1883, for those courageously rescuing those affected by the “flood of the century” on the rivers Main and Rhein.
Only a total of 196 medals were awarded. 157 to citizens of the state of Hesse, 39 to foreigners including 22 members of the King’s Prussian Engineer Regiment No. 11.
