The German School Association was founded on May 13, 1880 as a result of the Cisleithanian language ordinances. According to the foundation principles, the primary goal of the school association was to promote the establishment of German schools and to maintain the existing ( schools) through grants towards teachers' salaries and the costs of teaching materials in minority areas without state funding. The Association was active in Bohemia, Moravia, Austrian Silesia, in Galicia and Bukovina, Lower Styria, Carniola and in the coastal region. It worked in South and Welschtirol.
