A rare wooden propeller of a German WW1 period time aircraft. It was made by "Propellerwerk Heine", the oldest German propeller maker based in Weidmannlust, Berlin.

HEINE PROPELLER maker marked. Another maker mark: HEINE WEIDMANNSLUST b. BERLIN. Several other stamps.

Laminations. Constructed from several layers of wood to provide more stability.

Approximately 275cm long and 25cm wide.

The crack to one side of the propeller is about 75cm long and can certainly be repaired with a good wood glue.

Important: This item is excluded from the shipping program for ratisbon's customers with status bronze, silver and gold.

This propeller was made for the 100PS Mercedes engine. The underlying design dates from 1913 when it was a four cylinder engine producing 70ps. The addition of two more cylinders raised the horse power to 100PS and development quickly raised this to 120ps and 160ps.

The design of the propeller dates from 1913-1914, but the 100ps engine was in use throughout WW1 in training aircraft etc, so a propeller like this sometimes appears to be an anomaly. But the serial number "2784" is comparatively early and suggests 1915. It would have been fitted to early B.I aircraft made by several makers such as Aviatik, Albatros, AEG, DFW and LFG.

The propeller, although made by Hugo Heine in the Waidmannslust suburb of Berlin, shows a design characteristic of Lucien Chauvière, whose ground-breaking research and experimentation made him the most eminent maker from 1911 to 1915, which is that the propeller trailing edge describes a straight line through the centre of the hub. However, experimentation by Herr Professor Doktor Ludwig Prandtl at MVA in Göttingen, produced better and more efficient design without this characteristic.

The data on the propeller translates as:

"100PS Merc": the engine power and make

"D": (Durchmesser) diameter "270cm

"St": (Steigung) pitch 150cm

"N2784": the serial number

Heine's serial numbers from 1913 to 1919, that I have recorded, run from 233 to c36,000.
