Very fine high quality award. Enameled. "900" silver stamped to the small ring. Silver, gilt. Not maker mark.

Textbook case of issue. Black velvet inlay. "Verdienstkreuz I. Stufe des Ordens vom Deutschen Adler" (this title was used from 1937-1939) printed to the silk lining. Red outside leather. Sunken gilt national eagle printed to the top. Gold lines. Opening and closing correctly.
