Born in 1894 he served in the old German Army where he was honored with several awards including the "Pour le mérite".
He initially retired in 1923, but latere served inter alia as leader of the Young-Stahlhelm Lower Saxony and entered the Luftwaffe as instructor of the Reconnaissance-Flying School Hildesheim.
