Karl Berchtold was the father of WWI Leutnant Andreas Berchtold. He served as Flugzeugführer with 2. and 4./Kampfgeschwader 54. His unit was involved in the Allied invasion of Sicily (9. July to 17. August 1943) and Normandy "D-Day". The II. Group was stationed the whole year 1942 on the Eastern Front. There the unit attacked the bases of the partisans and railway stations as well as destroyed the rail network.
