Normandy 29th ID Purple Heart grouping 1944

Beschreibung
Grouping to Private Basil T. Rizzo from New Jersey, USA, who served with 115th Infantry Regiment 29th ID) in Normandy in June 1944. Rizzo was part of the 6th June D-Day landing operations and most probably touched French ground in morning of D-Day.

Basil RIZZO of I Company/115th Infantry was KIA on June 15th, 1944 just North of St Lo, while on patrol to reconnoiter towards the line of departure for a planned attack towards St Lo the next day. Patrol was led by Lt Colin McLaurin. The patrol was pinned down by MG fire and when a German Self Propelled gun opened up Rizzo was killed along with two other GIs. The patrol turned out unsuccessful. He was buried at the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer (Plot G, Row 3, Grave 19).

Part of the grouping is his period framed certificate to the PURPLE HEART which is 25.9.1944 dated. The actual Purple Heart comes in its original case. Case and medal are in very good condition. The medal shows Rizzos name engraved to the reverse.

Furthermore his framed certificate of death facsimile signed by president Roosevelt and a modern picture of the Colleville cemetery with Rizzos details.

A very rare D-Day grouping in good condition.  Discussed here: http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=780679
