An assortment of 1858 Civil War Forage Caps. 2 CSA’s and 3 Union with either flat or normal visor. Some seem to be original.

Three Model 1858 forage cap, navy wool with black leather visor and chin strap, with gold-colored buttons. First has a bugle insignia on its avers, sweet band with breaks and wear, the second has gilded brass insigina “G 1” attached to the top and is in worn condition. The third has the maker: “W.Stokes Kirk - Military Goods - Philadelphia Penna.” inside and is with flat visor.

Three Model 1858 forage cap, grey-blue wool with black leather visor and chin strap, with gold-colored buttons. One with gilded brass swords attached to the top, sweet band detached but maker: “W.Stokes Kirk - Military Goods - Philadelphia Penna.” with flat visor. The other without maker or insignia. Both show “CSA” buttons.

The forage cap was introduced just in time to become the signature headgear of the Civil War soldier. This model was the most popular worn by the Union army, officers and enlisted men alike. It was adopted as standard army headgear. The visor can be flat or sloping. Because of its popularity, the cap was made in several styles.
