Iron Cross 2nd Class with Oak Leaves and Jubilee Number "25"

Description

Iron Cross set containing the very same Iron Cross 2nd class, 1870, Type A, with jubilee oak leaf cluster “25” and the extremely rare to find original case of issue. The case made from brown leather shows a gold imprinted Iron Cross symbol on the lid and has the contemporary hook keeping the lid closed. The case also shows inventory label ready “10.” Indicating that this Iron Cross went to somebody highly decorated. The fact that the white satin lid interior shows the very early date of the award of 5. September 1870 supports this theory.

A very nice, very old and beautiful set for a 2nd class from the Franco Prussian War.

The cross has a silver frame and a blackened iron core. With extremely long ribbon and probably never worn judging by the condition of the hardware. The case unfortunately ripped in the back and taped.

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
